Dumbo Review

A classic is revived in a live action remake.

Alison Barlow, Writer

Dumbo is the story of a baby elephant with large ears who is bullied and has to overcome many challenges. Dumbo is a classic film and when Disney announced that they were making a new version, many people wanted to see the movie. The new Dumbo came out on March 29, 2019, and stars Eva Green (Collette) , Colin Farrell (Holt Farrier), Danny DeVito (Medici) , Michael Keaton (Vandemere), and Joseph Gatt (Neils Skellig).

This new movie was well done and captured the spirit of Dumbo by showing his vulnerability and his need for friendship and acceptance.  The addition of the Farrier family shows Dumbo’s struggles as seen through the family’s eyes. It was heart-wrenching, but it had serious overtones.  The remake had more scary, dark moments in it. The villains were creepy and more vengeful than they were in the original.

Although I enjoyed the new Dumbo movie, I was disappointed that none of the elephants talked in this version. The elephants were cruel to Dumbo in the animated version, but they were characters with personality.  I liked the childlike innocence of the original Dumbo, which was lacking in the remake.

The original movie had some wonderful songs that were sung with an upbeat cheerfulness.  My favorite song was Baby Mine. This song was included in the remake, but it wasn’t as moving as it was in the original.  In the animated version, it is a lullaby and I felt that Betty Noyes, who sang it the original,  captured the emotion of the song better.

The remake is still in theaters and will be until June 5th.  If you don’t see it in the theaters, see it when it comes out on DVD or rent it. It’s a wonderful movie and worth seeing.
