On April 28th, the school board had released forum for student to look at regarding the overpopulation of students inside high schools, with the overabundance of students it becomes harder for teachers to be able to teach with them constantly having to move around and the school having to expand which will cost them lots of money.
The forum that was created goes over options that can be done which includes: option one which will have 6th graders be considered elementary students and 9th graders be considered middle schoolers, this will help with the overpopulation inside the high school but will make the other schools crowded as they will have more students to handle.
Another option that can be chosen is keeping it as is, since the amount of students each year is estimated to decrease. After a few years the high school will be less populated than it is now but that will take longer than option one.
When interviewing high school students about what they thought about the forum, some seem to be quite pessimistic about the how it will be done and if it will work, a teacher named George Roth responded to the question stating “it wouldn’t be a good idea because of the lack of credits students would be able to receive during high school” as well as stating their disinterest with the whole situation, It’s true that if the school chooses to go with, option 1: students won’t have an extra year to get much extra credits for their graduation unless the school decides to change the requirements for graduation.
When asking for a student’s opinion on the whole thing, Hiram Lanato, a sophomore in Tahoma high school had given a response questioning whether or not the whole thing will work stating, “what if there will be more students then what they showed during the slideshow”, this brings up a good question about the population of the other schools since if there are more students than expected then it could result in elementary and middle schools being more populated then the high school is now.
