As the end of the semester approaches at Tahoma High School, many students are experiencing increased stress due to finals, projects, and academic pressure. Psychologists believe that even at the end of big checkpoints in teenagers’ lives or adulthood, it is emotionally demanding.
Students say the stress comes from juggling multiple final exams, late-night studying, and expectations to finish strong before next semester. Along with academics, extracurricular commitments and pressure to maintain grades add to the mental load many teens are carrying.
A licensed psychologist explained that teens are especially vulnerable to stress during this time because their brains are still developing. “Adolescents are still building emotional regulation skills, so when multiple deadlines stack up, their stress response is much stronger,” the psychologist said. They added that fear of failure and comparison to peers can intensify anxiety, especially at the end of a semester.
Several Tahoma High School (THS) students shared similar feelings about the upcoming weeks. “Everything is due at the same time, and it feels overwhelming,” one student said. Another added, “I definitely feel more stressed than usual, especially with finals coming up next week.”
However, not all students expressed only negative problems. Some students said they are simply pushing through. ”I’m stressed, but honestly I’m just ready for a fresh semester, a new start.” Another agreed, saying, “It’s a lot right now, but once it’s done, it’s done.”
The psychologist emphasized that this mix of stress and relief is common, noting that teens often feel pressure and exhaustion at the same time. “The desire for a rate can actually help students stay motivated, even when stress is high,” they said. Along with this, they also said they recommend that students take short breaks while studying, get enough sleep, and ask for help when needed. Many teachers have also reminded students to communicate if they are struggling.
Some students say listening to music, spending time with friends, or counting down the days until the short break after semester 1 helps them manage stress during finals week. While academic pressure can feel overwhelming, recognizing stress and finding healthy ways to manage it can make this demanding time more manageable. With finals nearly over and a new semester ahead, many students can look forward to a fresh start and a chance to reset both mentally and academically.
