AI is taking over lifestyles today, from the classroom to a crash course on changing a tire but, what is this helpful assistant hiding?
Tahoma High School Biology and Intro to Physics & Chemistry teacher Ben Cook gives his insight on AI.
When asked his thoughts on AI and its effects on the Earth, Cook responded with, “Overall, I compare the recent surge in development of AI to the surge of computers and the internet. It has the potential to be extremely beneficial to the planet and humanity but also needs to be regulated”
Society is known for wanting to make things simpler, easier for the human workload. However, Cook’s point is true.
There is a need to regulate AI so that it doesn’t get blown out of proportion and harm humans rather than its intended purpose to help them.
AI can affect more than just the environment, but also the fundamentals of intelligence for society.
“My hope is that AI will allow for more individualized education, where students can consult an AI ‘teacher’ that can explain things in different ways that make it easier to understand various concepts,” Cook explains.
This can be revolutionary for all students, especially those who have learning disabilities or simply need some more help understanding a concept.
Beyond the scientific facts behind why AI can impact the environment in negative ways, one can see why a student would decide to use it.
Who wouldn’t want all of the answers to their burning questions readily available at their fingertips?
Sophomore Jhianna Del Rosario shares, “I do think the majority of our peers use AI on a daily basis.”
Many THS students can vouch for the generalization that most students often use AI, whether it’s in a helpful, or hurtful way.
Del Rosario also states, “Even though I do think AI is helpful it’s still hurting the earth every time we use it…”
Del Rosario doesn’t use AI on a daily basis and believes that it doesn’t impact her life that much.
However, she is still able to recognize that it has negative impacts on the planet.
