While it’s no doubt AI has become a huge part of school environments, there is some doubt stating as to whether or not its role in classroom setting is beneficial or possibly detrimental to growing brains. While AI’s presence seems to be rapidly growing, how do you think its role has affected your average day class time?
Researchers had the same question and conducted a survey and found out that approximately 85-86% of students reported using AI in the classroom with about 26-50% of those students allegedly using it to complete assignments and homework. While the remaining 50% stated that they used it for brainstorming and gathering thoughts together.
Across the world, teachers have reported catching students using AI to do their assignments for them and that it wasn’t actually them using their critical thinking skills.
By having AI sources like ChatGPT or Gemini complete the work for you, it’s giving our educators a false sense of our understanding on topics.
Mrs. Bumo, a current middle school teacher, provided her insight on how she believes AI is ultimately stripping kids of their everyday education just because “they can”. She says, “I find more and more kids every week using AI on their assignments just to get them done faster, and when it comes time for the test, all those kids who abuse ChatGPT draw a blank the moment their eyes hit the paper.”
Although many educators look down on the use of AI, there are some teachers who value the resource when it is used correctly.
Mrs. Barret, an AVP english teacher, greatly expressed how, while it may have some downsides, when used as a resource it can come in handy. She says, “I’ve used AI sources like ChatGPT myself to help with grading and organization when it comes to papers. I even had it help create some templates.”
Not only has it served as a tool for students but has also proved to be a resource for teachers as well to help make their jobs seemingly lighter.
Ultimately, the use of AI is increasing right in front of our eyes and it’s important to be mindful about both its benefits and drawbacks.

I completely agree with this article. AI has 100% taken over the education system and there needs to be something done about it.
