Over 20 sports are offered here at Tahoma High School, and typically only seven-10 of those sports teams make it to state championships, so it makes you wonder what of our sports are going to be heading to state.
Tuesday, February 3rd was National sendoffs for cheer, there are 5 other sendoffs happening in the month of February. “We have 5 sendoffs left in the month of February, the first one being wrestling state sendoff on the 12th, gymnastics state sendoff on the 13th along with the swim & dive state sendoff also on the 13th, Deca state sendoff on the 25th, basketball state sendoff on the 26th. And that concludes the state sendoffs for February.” As stated by Ryan Simpson. He also explained that, “The only one that was a nationals sendoff was cheer, the rest are just state sendoffs.”
State and nationals are not just a competition for different sports teams, but goals that people set for themselves and some days end up meeting their once dreams now made reality. While only the best go to the state championships, often the top 16 teams in the state go to the championships. It’s an amazing honor and reward to the athletes with their hard work and dedication to their sport. Mr.Hansen has gone to all the state events that these sports have to offer here at Tahoma. “My favorite is probably the Mat Classic for wrestling. Seeing the entire Tacoma Dome covered in 24 wrestling mats is a little overwhelming. Even though wrestling provides the “biggest spectacle,” all of the championships are cool in their own way. For instance, Dance and Cheer have a really cool awards ceremony with glow in the dark and dancing. It is very party-like… and LOUD!!” He also states that his favorite part about all the teams that are going to states is that they are coming together to represent tahoma high school. “Seeing the Tahoma uniforms matched up against the best teams from all over our state instills a sense of pride and school spirit that is difficult to put into words.” stated Mr. Hansen.
While not everyone can make it to championships, it’s always important to try hard and never give up, to trust in the process and to work hard and trust yourself and what you can do. And come back to the next season with new goals and new strengths and new energy towards winning the next season and harnessing their new goals that they made over the season before. And one way to help out our teams is going to those championships and watching them on their battlefield fighting for our school and showing us who they are and what they can do. We have to show them that we as a school are there for them and not just here at the end of the day if they win, we have to let them know that we will be there for them whether they win or lose, Either is okay.
