Micro-trends have taken over social media by storm, popping up fast and disappearing even faster.
Many might remember the chokehold that fidget spinners had on kids and teens during 2016, however, who has really seen one in the last 10 years?
Micro-trends, which are short-lived viral fashion styles or items, tend to come and go with the speed of light and not hold a lasting impact on consumers.
A Target employee, who requested not to be named, states that, “The item that I get asked for the most right now is definitely Needoh’s, and they don’t last more than a day on shelves either.”
Currently, Needoh’s are a huge trend on social media, and the last time fidgets were popular, they didn’t last more than a year before they got tossed to the bottom of drawers and forgotten about.
An anonymous Target employee additionally shares that, “I would say that Target definitely caters towards trends…a lot of times we’ll receive shipments of a new style or item, and people will come in asking for them…”
Most of these trend-following consumers tend to come into the store with a TikTok pulled up, using it as a reference for their new found “needs”.
While micro-trends can be fun, they tend to take away the individuality of people within society, stripping away one’s unique style, culture and even identity.
In Tahoma High School (THS), micro trends aren’t astray of being popular, many students swiftly hop on the bandwagon of micro trends.
Sophomore THS student Addie Oberbilling, shares what micro-trends were most popular in 2025: “Probably camo and… pink bows… I remember seeing both prints on the same top.”
Many THS students find it easier to participate in micro trends that revolve around clothing, as it’s easier opposed to carrying objects around.
Oberbilling then expresses her favorite micro trends she herself has participated in “I love… certain designs on my shirts, and the fuzzy socks with Uggs.”
Micro trends will continue to inflate for years to come per usual, whether this is through popular trinkets like snap bracelets or squishy fruit, jeggings and low-rise jeans or even apps like musically, they will come and go.
