Memorial Day means different things to different people.
Some people just simply see it as a four day weekend, others see it as an actual day to remember those who have served and deserve to be remembered. So they actually do things to remember said people.
Usually if you were to ask the younger kids what does memorial day mean to them they would say it’s an extra day to sleep in and play video games all day. But if you were to ask someone a little bit older, they would possibly say they would go out to the cemetery and visit some of the veterans and or place down flags out of respect.
Today I went and talked to two different students, two different juniors about what they did or what their general thoughts are on Memorial day. And both of their responses were very similar with what they do/think of Memorial day.
The first student I talked to said that “it’s just a day off for me i don’t celebrate it.” (Rehal) Which is very common among students who do not have any family members who served in the military before.
And while I was talking to the second student, she said that “tbh I just enjoy it as a day off with my family” (Osburn) This is something that I even do with my family; since we don’t have a lot of people to personally remember, we often just spend the day together.
So both of them don’t necessarily celebrate the holiday for its intended purpose, but the second student talks about how she would just enjoy the day with her family. Another really popular thing a lot of students and families will do on Memorial Day is they will host barbecues and big events for lots of people to come and gather, and just hang around with one another.
Even though neither of the students I talked to said they would go and visit family who had served; what people will often do is depending on where you live, they will go to a cemetery and either just say hi or they’ll place flags down next to them out of respect for them.
And lastly, another activity people will do is they will have parades-they will have marching bands and veterans will walk in said parades.
