Here at Tahoma High School we offer an amazing music program ranging from all different kinds of instruments to amazing ensembles of singers. On April 25th in our school’s auditorium, proud parents, family members, and companions came together to watch our orchestra perform their spring concert for our community.
This event showcased String Orchestra, Sinfonietta, and Chamber musicians. After months of preparation and working hard in and out of school to prepare songs that we felt would best fit the audience preferences, our spring concert was nothing less than a rewarding success.
Mr. Cole, our school’s very own orchestra teacher and director, expressed his gratitude towards our ensembles and how much they’ve grown throughout the year to really bring out the best in our school’s concerts.
He says, “The most challenging part of this was to help students see that they CAN do this…that they ARE good enough…and that they have the POWER to be as good as they want!” To him, the most difficult thing he’s had to help our orchestra students with was showing them that they were capable of being amazing; they just had to believe in themselves too.
The orchestra students, string orchestra all the way to chamber, put in countless hours to make sure our concert was as memorable for you as it was for us. We had to learn to adapt, utilize and challenge ourselves to really emphasize the sound in our pieces when playing.
While working hard every day to master our pieces in class, we’ve also worked hard at stepping outside our comfort zones and forming friendships through music and slowly getting more comfortable with the people around us.
The difference between the sounds produced at the beginning of the year, when no one really knew each other, and the sounds at the end of the year, when the ensemble had become comfortable together, really highlights the contrast in the music being played. Mr. Cole emphasized that we’ve grown as an orchestra family and trust each other more when playing to create a bigger sound with more confidence.
Our orchestra program here at Tahoma is an amazing experience and opportunity for people to create connections through music and form friendships that make the ensemble stronger and more enjoyable. Nonetheless it’s the perfect opportunity to get involved and learn skills that can be utilized for future careers.
