More Than a Dance: Why Prom Still Matters for Today’s Students
Prom season is approaching fast, bringing with it a mix of excitement, nerves, and anticipation. But for many students, prom is more than just a night of music and fancy outfits, it’s a milestone. It marks the end of the school year, a celebration of friendships, and one of the last moments the school community comes together before graduation sends seniors in different directions.
To understand why this tradition still matters, especially for students deciding whether prom is worth attending, three students I met with, a couple of seniors and junior to share their opinions on this experience.
“It’s one of the last times we’re all together.” – Symphony Autom says.
For senior Symphony, prom carries emotional weight.
“Honestly, it feels like the last big moment before everything changes,” she said. “For seniors, it’s one of the last times we’re all in the same room, celebrating together. It’s not just a dance, it’s like a goodbye party we actually get to enjoy.”
She believes the tradition still matters because of the memories it creates.
“People think it’s outdated, but it’s really about memories. Years from now, you won’t remember the homework or the tests, you’ll remember nights like this.”
“Go at least once”, Jade Elliot says the energy of prom is what makes it special.
“Everyone’s dressed up, everyone’s excited, and for one night, nobody’s stressed about school,” she said. “It feels like a celebration of everything we’ve made it through.”
Her message to underclassmen who are unsure about going is simple: try it.
“You don’t need a date, you don’t need a perfect outfit — just go with your friends. It’s one of those experiences you don’t want to regret missing.”
“It brings everyone together”, Kevin Mensah says.
Kevin sees prom as a rare moment of unity.
“It brings everyone together,” he said. “You see people who never talk dancing next to each other, laughing, taking pictures. It’s one of the few times the whole school feels connected.”
For him, prom marks a turning point.
“It’s like the moment you realize, ‘Wow, we’re actually growing up.’ It hits different when you’re a senior.”
Why Prom Still Matters
For students, especially those still deciding whether to go, these perspectives show why prom remains meaningful. It’s not just about the decorations or the playlist. It’s about celebrating the end of a chapter, appreciating the people who shared it with you, and creating memories that last long after high school ends.
