Habitat loss is a large part of why animals are going extinct, as of early 2026. The planet is experiencing its SIXTH mass extinction all thanks to habitat loss and climate change and even human activity which is a big aspect of it. Over 40,000 animals are said to soon be extinct due to them being on the IUCN Red List.
What is the IUCN Red list? It’s basically a list of all the animals that are getting very close to extinction or the ones that are in the most critical condition. Even ones that fall under the current cause of pollution and poaching in the oceans, many places are covered in water parts.

The most critically endangered animals listed on worldwildlife are shown to be some of the top animals that hunters love to go after or the animals that are mostly affected by humans, These animals include:
The Black Rhinos/The White Rhino– Black Rhinos, also known as Diceros bicornis, are critically endangered with less than 6,500 left in the world. Their population has been steadily declining since the beginning of the 20th century. Black Rhinos are the smallest of the two African Rhino species, making them easier to hunt for the “European hunters and settlers” and because of this the European hunters between 1960-1995 had dropped the Black Rhino population 98%.
The Hawksbill Turtles– They are one of the many types of turtles that hunters sell their shell on sites that refer to them as tortoiseshell. Interesting fact, “Did you know that Sea Turtles are the living representatives of a group of reptiles that have existed on Earth and travelled our seas for the last 100 million years” as stated on the Hawksbill Turtles page on the World Wildlife site. While there is no exact estimation on the site of how many individuals are left of this turtle species, some could guess it ranges in the 8000’s.
The Vaquitas– The world’s rarest marine mammal that is currently on its way to extinction. With a total of 10 individuals left as stated by the site. ”They were only just founded in 1958 and we are on the brink of losing them forever” while getting to this point may have been an accident by fisherman. It was found to be very popular in sales due to the value of the swim bladder that they have.
The Snow Leopard– Snow Leopards, also known as the ghosts of the mountains, are born to live in environments drastically different from humans, with their thick white coats with black rosettes helping to bend them within Asia’s rocky mountains. Snow Leopards aren’t critically endangered ,only vulnerable, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth saving. Snow Leopards are critical to the food chain in Asia’s rock mountains and are needed for the security of the food chain.

What are the closest animals that are stated to be extinct by the end of 2026? Thanks to Fauna-flora Species to watch in 2026. We are able to know just what animals are the closest to going extinct in 2026.
Clouded Leopard– Clouded Leopards have a beautiful patterned coat that allows them to blend in with the terrain, perfect for their natural habitats. Unfortunately their coat makes them a prime target for the illegal wildlife trade The Clouded Leopards are going extinct because of human interference. According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, they are vulnerable to going extinct, which may sound like we shouldn’t worry but how many Clouded leopards need to die before you care about them? They are being killed and having their skin removed for people who illegally want to wear them or people who take them as babies just to show how such a beautiful predator is just a measly pet, who would do that.
