Students Talk Gender Equality

Every day is a new day and the same conversations go on at Tahoma High School. Most conversations are always about being a good student, clubs, or sports. Those things are important and all, but what about Gender Equality? No one really ever talks about this topic because no one seems to fully understand it or think it’s important. But, should it be?

Due to the media these days gender equality has become a huge topic that most people talk about. A few weeks ago the media started a huge trend where people who have experienced sexual assault or sexual abuse post a picture or tweet out with the #Metoo, causing students at Tahoma to see this and question if gender equality should be more talked about at Tahoma High School.

In some interviews that took place at Tahoma different people had different things to say about the topic. Starting off with a member of the Gender Equality club junior Supreet Sandhu, “Our club has sadly been seen in a negative context due to the lack of understanding on the behalf of others who believe our club is only open to women and only care to better women rather than both genders, which is completely false and sickening.”. Another student that was interviewed said “Gender Equality is pretty Important in today’s society, everyone should matter equally.” said Rohit Tripathy. But, one of the students, freshman Hayden Motzer said “What does that even mean?” when asked what gender equality meant.

For the most part, it seems like gender equality should be more important and talked about at school. 2 out of 3 of the students said something that made it clear that gender equality should be more talked about at school. Supreet talked about how the gender equality club was misunderstood, therefore students ignoring it and judging it. Hayden said how he didn’t know what gender equality was, but that wasn’t his fault, simply being that the school doesn’t make gender equality be an important topic to the student body.

Maybe even students just decide not to care about gender equality because Tahoma doesn’t talk about it. So they just assume it’s not a conversation that is worth talking about because they feel like they’d be judged for talking about something different that people aren’t used to hearing about.

Students are not the only ones being challenged to talk more about gender equality. Society as a whole is being challenged to talk about something that is different and not everyone might like what they hear. That is why people don’t speak up about gender equality because it’s not something a person just brings up in daily conversation. Bringing back the #Metoo that was talked about at the beginning. Many people, both male and female decided to take this opportunity to speak up about gender equality and how men and women were the same and no gender was above the other.

Many might not care about gender equality because they might feel like it doesn’t affect them in any way since it’s not something that is brought up on a daily basis. But, maybe it’s important to start caring about it, and talk about it in schools, at work, and anywhere else that is a community. At least for the sake of our future and future generations.
