Tragedy has struck the car community. On January 2, 2023, American Rally Driver, Ken Block, 55, passed away after a snowmobiling accident near his home in Utah. Block raced with the Hoonigan Driving team and division while he also was one of the cofounders of DC shoes. He also competed in many sport events including snowboarding, skateboarding, and motocross. After Block co-founded the skateboard company, DC Shoes, he sold it in 2004 for a whopping $87 million with his partners. After that he became known as a rally driver and earned 5 medals in X Games while competing in motocross, snowboarding and skateboarding events. Hoonigan Racing Division was founded by Block himself and on his website they share that, “Ken Blockʼs rally career began in 2005. His skill and car control became quickly apparent and Block aptly nabbed Rookie of the Year that season in the Rally America Championship. Since then, Block has continued to race in the series, racking up numerous overall wins as well as plenty of podium appearances.” Block was an idol to many and still is as his legacy will live on. Throughout my childhood, I grew up watching and cheering on Block as my dad was a huge fan of him and his talent. As ESPN states,“This year, Ken was so happy. At the races, he was happy to be racing with Lucy and to have his daughter racing and to have his kids at most of the races,” action sports icon Travis Pastrana told ESPN. “Few people get to the point in their lives where everything comes together, and to have it all taken away like this is devastating.” Block was part of the reason why I love cars and have a passion for them. While many of my other peers at Tahoma agree, Block was one of our biggest icons and idols of our time. Blocks legacy will live on throughout his daughter, Lia while she has been competing for Hoonigan Racing for 5 years since she was the age of 11, following after her father. Block has made a massive impact on our community in general but specifically the ones who grew up watching him grow as a person, and a legend.
