Delia Owens’ novel Where the Crawdads Sing was published in 2018. It has topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 and The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2020 for a total of 32 weeks in a row. The book had been on the bestseller list for 150 weeks as of late February 2022.

The plot revolves around two parallel timelines that gradually merge together. From 1952 through 1969, the first timeline follows the lives and experiences of a little girl named Kya as she grows up amid the marshlands of North Carolina. The second timeline continues the investigation into the alleged murder of Chase Andrews, a star in Barkley Cove, a fictitious seaside town in North Carolina.

In September 2018, the book was chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine Book Club and Barnes & Noble’s Best Books of 2018. The book had sold over 4.5 million copies by December 2019, and it sold more print copies in 2019 than any other adult product, fiction or nonfiction. It was also No. 1 on Amazon.com’s list of Most Sold Books in Fiction for 2019. The New York Times classified it as the year’s #6 hardback bestseller in late December 2020. Publishers Weekly named it the 14th best-selling book of 2021 in 2022, with 625,599 copies sold. The book has sold 12 million copies by January 2022.

The film rights to this book are owned by Fox 2000. It will be produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production business, with Witherspoon serving as producer. Lucy Alibar turned the book into a screenplay. Kya will be played by Daisy Edgar-Jones. Taylor Tate Walker and Chase Andrews will be played by John Smith and Harris Dickinson, respectively. Filming took place in and around New Orleans and Houma, Louisiana, from mid-April until mid-late June 2021. Filming was completed on July 5, 2021, according to Cosmopolitan.
