Why Power Hour is The Best Part of Tahoma

Tahoma High School is a highly regarded 4A school in the Maple Valley area. In fact Greatschool.org rated the school a 9/10 and a  10/10 in college readiness. Obviously this is due to a lot of things, including the staff promoting a future ready theme where the students always have to be aware and thinking about their future. They must know the skills they will need to have to exceed at the next level. They do this amazingly by having “Future Ready Days” where students hear from all kinds of different people about different careers and how students qualify for them. But there is one thing that sets Tahoma apart from most Schools when it comes to being ready for the future, and that thing is Power Hour.

Power Hour is a program in Tahoma that is an hour long lunch that gives students an oppritunity to do homework, participate clubs, get to know teachers, and have a good time. Most lunches in other schools are around 30 minutes so there would be no chance for people to do the activities that we can at Tahoma. This is esspecialy true for freshman at Tahoma. Every freshman has a class called Freshman Success where they will have a Power Hour form they are required to get filled out. To get full credit for this assignment that is weekly, they must go to 2 power hours a week one non academic and one academicThis gives kids the opportunity to explore different hobbies, get homework done, get ahead on assignments and mainly just socialize and take advantage of an experience other kids don’t have.

Steven Kent a teacher at the school had some thoughts about the power hour program as well. He stated “Our goal for the kids is for them to take advantage of it”. The staff has come up with a great program for the kids and they really just want them to be using it as much as they can. Another thing he said was “ It gives kids the opportunity to join clubs”. He believes that the best part of Power hour is the social aspect and how kids can spend time with their peers. The reason why power hour is so important and meaningful in Tahoma is because of how it hits on so many aspects. Not only the academic and getting homework done but also just hanging out.
