FBLA puts on a change drive to combat food insecurity

Cristina Azizeh, FBLA Adviser

FBLA is doing a coin drive this week with the funds going to Backpack Buddies (A local non-profit service organization) There mission is: Provide nutritional supplementation for children within the Tahoma School District who are food insecure over the weekend.

Backpack Buddies benefits district children who are food insecure. The USDA defines food insecurity as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways”. Children are nominated based on a variety of factors such as participation in the free/reduced lunch program, teacher and principal input.

The program will be funded through donations, fundraising and gifts and run solely by volunteers. Volunteers will meet weekly on Thursdays beginning in late September. Provided with a number of students needing nutritional assistance, volunteers will pack paper bags with nutritional food items meant to supplement what is available at home. Food items vary but may include juice, milk, fruit cups, pasta, soup, granola bars, oatmeal, dried and fresh fruit.

PLEASE ask your students to bring in change (dollars are okay too) throughout the week. They can give change in any class it doesn’t have to be a certain class period.
FBLA students will be bringing envelopes to each teacher during Power Hour today.
