Every year, all attendees and co-chair members selected by Anna Wintour come together for one night to host what many be deemed as “the event of the year” at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Central Park. There were so many memorable moments as well as iconic looks. Let’s hear what others had to say about it.
Following these dress codes are a hit or miss, an example comes from their 2019 “Camp” setting where all attendees were expected to interpret the phrase that means something is so ugly it’s cool, it ended up receiving more backlash than anticipated praise. This year’s theme highlighted a fusion between nature and fashion, and we got to see a variety of ethereal, unconventional designs along with archival pieces from world renowned houses around the globe.
There were many that defiantly showed out, but Zendaya was one of the stars who truly stood out with not one but two looks, her first being a custom Maison Margiela dress by John Galliano, taking inspiration from Dior’s 1999 haute couture collection when he was their creative director, then stunned paparazzi with look number two being archival Givenchy with an Alexander McQueen head piece.
Senior, Grey Pollreis who follows very closely to this yearly occasion expressed his opinion on her and everybody else’s looks with stylist Law Roach. “I think the fact they are so contrasting, it shows the difference in theme and exemplifies the mastery.” He had also stated that when criticism mostly aims celebrities that don’t fit the theme, people need to understand that opinions should also be taken up with the brand since designers are also the ones who decide which outfits goes to who.
To end off this year’s recap, here are some honorable mentions. Model Kendall Jenner turned heads when she gave a more dark dramatic look in a vintage Givenchy dress from their 1999 fall winter haute couture collection by Alexander McQueen. Since this gown was first shown on a mannequin then immediately brought to storage, Jenner made history by becoming the first human to wear this original piece. Then for her second time attending the Met, actress Alia Bhatt presented her Indian heritage in a custom 23 foot long Saree made by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and grammy award winning South African singer Tyla showed out in her first debut wearing Balmain, the gown molded to her body was made to reference “Sands of Time.”
Although the met just came to a close, what do you think will be next year’s theme ?
