From April 17-20 in São Paulo, Brazil; their Fashion week has happened! Although São Paulo’s fashion week is not very well known, they still show and represent such a unique style that is not seen as much in the four main cities, Milan, Paris, New York and London.
We went and had a conversation with our Tahoma Fashion teacher: Mrs.Durrett and she made many great statements. First off, we asked: Do you think there are any differences between São Paulo and the four main fashion week cities? She said, “They show their body in a way that isn’t hypersexual and it is amazing.” (Durrett) what she said is truly amazing, in today’s society a lot of things that reveal a little or a lot of skin are turned sexual.
We then asked her if she thinks that there is diversity like the four main cities in São Paulo and she said “Fashion wise yes, but a lot of the models have similar body types” (Durrett) which is completely right! Lastly, we showed her two shows, from: Andre Lima and Lino Villaventura. Andre Lima had many statements in the eyebrows and ropes appearing to go through the ears and Mrs.Durrett loved this. Lino Villaventura had a lot of shapes and textures that really caught not just Durrett’s eye but all of ours, they were both truly stunning to watch.
Stella Barry was asked what her thoughts were about the showings as well. The words she used to explain her feelings towards it was “calm, yet ecstatic, and fresh” (Barry). She explained, “I’ve never seen anything like it before..” (Barry).
When she was asking what differences she saw between the four main fashion week cities, she described the “vibe that is brought from each city”, she felt that “brought something special to each showing, and the added to the fashion itself” (Barry).
Her biggest point was that in “countries outside of America that would be seen at explicit and inappropriate were seen as beautiful and unsexualized” (Barry). She believed that the “different body types and the way they were shown embraced the beauty of humans in general” (Barry).
Fashion has the ability to embrace fears and bold ideas in ways that can encourage communities to come together and create change. The power fashions holds is in the eye of the beholder.
