To any Moana fans out there, if you don’t know already, Disney will be releasing Moana 2 in November 2024, with Dwayne The Rock Johnson reprising his role. Ever since the reimagining of The Little Mermaid released in May of 2023, there has been a peak of interest to bring these original tales to another level. Let’s hear what others had to say about it.
While most are thrilled to get this sequel there are some who think the opposite. Sophomore Sophia Yee doesn’t seem that fond of this upcoming project stating in her response when asked what she is looking forward to in this second part. “I hope we don’t have a sequel. The story is good as it is, and I love Moana so much I would hate to see it ruined by a sequel.” While most are excited to see it, Yee thinks their new storyline is going to be a “stereotypical thing” and introduces an entirely different plotline that makes the original main characters go on the journey through it.
After Disney released their teaser trailer, immediate speculations graced multiple media platforms about a possible live action adaptation. Since Auliʻi Cravalho who voiced the princess of Motunui, hasn’t shown much desire to play her in real life. Many fans have star studded actress Zendaya as their fan-cast favorite to play her. There is no doubt her singing, acting, and dancing, along with her history in this network would perform exceptionally well, but others have conflicting opinions given the fact that she isn’t ethnically Polynesian or of Hawaiian descent.
Her fans do worry since other actresses before her who portrayed these other iconic princesses received a rude awakening, from Halle Baileys struggles with heavy racist backlash after her casting for Ariel, to Rachel Zeglers online harassment after being chosen to portray Snow White for the 2025 Film after SAG Strikes delayed their original date for March 2024.
This is something that they can’t escape, but no matter what happens in this continuation of this incredible journey of self discovery, it will be incredible regardless. Junior Laniya Reece adds a positive twist with her take on the direction. She thinks Moana will embark on new adventures, along with saving more islands and people. With her trustable Demigod Maui, their stars will align again.
