Over twenty years, she has shared her passions in education which has made big waves within Tahoma’s school district. In her fashion design and merchandising classes, her students have gotten great opportunities in getting to learn about the history of world renowned designer houses. It also offers hands on projects that consist of analyzing textiles, sewing lessons, and leading an exclusive tour to Tommy Bahama’s corporate office.
Her contributions also transcend catwalks to English language arts where she teaches one class specifically for juniors since that was the subject she once neglected in 11th grade. Since her college years when she retook that subject, it is now her mission to show future generations that importance of this type of background. Now as we begin to come to a close of the 2023-2024 school year, Abby Durrett is also ready to graduate.
Looking back on what has been one storied career, let’s hear what some of her colleagues had to say. When asked about her time served here and the fact she is now 65 years old and has expanded her career over 20 years and how it inspires her, a fellow staff member said, “not only has Mrs. Durrett taught for over 20 years but she works hard everyday, it is not unusual to see her early in the morning or after school. Always positive, a combination and a positive attitude makes me want to be my best self.”
Kathryn Strojan who is one of our future ready center specialists expresses the influence she feels when seeing her in action. When asked about what impact she has had on students, in her words she “really cares about her students, it shows in her day to day interactions, Mrs. Durrett is kind but not a pushover, and does many different things very well.”
Now it’s time to hear from this dedicated educator herself. In her words when asked on what legacy she’ll leave behind, she said, “each one of us is capable of anything we put our mind to! We need to see others in the same way and encourage them to pursue their dreams and be the best they can be.”
For the next educator who will be stepping into this position next school year, Durrett leaves behind some words of wisdom by expressing that “Ms. Osborn is the perfect one to step into this position, she loves her profession, believes in students and is always wanting to learn more. Enjoy the ride, these kids are stylin’.”
We appreciate everything Abby Durrett has done for the Tahoma School District and the Maple Valley community, leaving an everlasting impact. Just like the great Maya Angelou said “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
