It’s the end of March and the great NCAA tournament is coming to a close, so, what’s happened? Have there been more upsets? Any cinderella stories? This article will feature an in depth review of this year’s March Madness tournament. As the final four approaches in coming days, there have been a few noteworthy upsets. Everybody’s eyes were on Oakland vs Kentucky in the first round, while everyone expected Kentucky to mop Oakland off the floor it was quite the opposite. Oakland found a way to stay in the game till the very end, yet late in the second half Oakland was able to pull away and win the game. Completing the tournaments first major upset, Oakland was led by the fifth year senior Jack Gohlke, and his whopping 10 three’s. Totaling a team leading 32 points in the win. Cameron Weisberg had this to say regarding Oakland’s win, “I couldn’t believe Oakland did that, I had Kentucky going much farther in the tournament.” Kentucky wasn’t the only team who fell to an upset, the Auburn Tigers unfortunately fell early in the first round to Yale. Another close game where the lower seed was just able to sneak by, Yale was lead by John Poulakidas and his 28 point performance. However, Yale wouldn’t make it past the next round, as Yale was blown out by the San Diego St. Aztecs 85-57, ending Yale’s historic season. As of recently, the tournament produced two other notable upsets. One and two seed North Carolina and Arizona, fell out of the tournament, as Alabama and Clemson were able to pull off the upset. Two teams that were favorites to win the tournament are now gone, leaving UCONN as the heavy favorites. UCONN has yet to be seriously tested as they’ve cruised to the elite 8, UCONN opens as an 8.5 favorite over Illinois. As the sweet 16 comes to an end, the most interesting matchup remains number two and three seed Creighton and Tennessee. All though my Dad disagrees, “NC State might be able to win it all with their momentum, I’m much more interested in that matchup then Creighton and Tennessee.” That matchup features NC State and Marquette. NC State being just the 11 seed applies serious pressure to Marquette, as the Wolfpack attempts to pull off the inevitable. With just a few games remaining, there are many great games waiting to be played. Will UCONN repeat as national champions? Or will they be knocked off their thrown?
