Second-semester slump. It’s something that many students are well aware of and familiar with.
Due to the difficulty of the second semester, students find it increasingly strenuous to perform at the same standards as the first semester, much less at the same level as their peers.
Although there are many reasons for this second-semester slump, as stated before, the mere rise in toil required to keep up becomes excruciating.
After cramming and non-stop studying in the midterms, there are several school breaks.
Yet, due to those breaks, schools bring forth numerous tests simultaneously for classes.
Each class tries to get their exams in before school gets off. This results in students needing to cram or “hard-core” study almost every single week.
Students may not have more than half an hour to themselves each day, contingent on their extracurriculars and the rigor of the classes in their schedule.
Additionally, topics tend to be vigorous in the second semester, requiring more effort to understand fully.
As said by Zoë Whitehouse, a sophomore at Tahoma High School, “The work becomes more difficult and more time-consuming.”
Not having time to recharge their energy and never getting a break could wear down the students and cause missing assignments to pile up. Even for late work penalties to potentially become a common occurrence.
However, academics are not the only thing relating to the actual second semester that causes this slump. Sophomores and up have to worry about something else that can create much distress while doing driver’s education.
Driver education is another class in itself and can take up to 2 hours almost every day for several weeks.
Then, they need to study what they learned while reviewing another booklet out of their initial driver’s class to read for the driver’s final exam.
Placing driver’s education on top of the daily to-do list while also being consistent with homework and regular studying is draining.
More so when the students need to take more time on weekends to practice driving, which in itself can cause stress and lower motivation to do other activities.
This can cause some problems due to how the second semester already entails a severe decrease in motivation.
Students are looking forward to summer, and are counting down the days until they can enjoy it.
Thus, they are more likely to do the bare minimum to coast until they drag themselves to the finish line despite the rise in the need for motivation.
All in all, the second semester was a rise in difficulty from the first semester for some students.
Though, of course, not all students have struggles in the second semester. Some do fine, and even find it to be not that much different than the first semester.
Nonetheless, it is important to acknowledge that some students are struggling. That way, precautions can be used to relieve stress and improve the productivity of each student.
Similarly stated by an anonymous student from Tahoma High School, “Balancing your time will make the entire year easier.”
