It’s March 15, 2024 and the NFL free agency buzz has officially died down. So, how did the Seahawks do? Well, the Seahawks had a really interesting approach to this years free agency class. The Seahawks generated over 52 million dollars in cap space prior to the start of the legal tampering period, however, they made a plethora of relatively insignificant moves. Besides the resigning of Leonard Williams, Noah Fant, and the signing of free agent linebacker Tyrel Dodson. The Seahawks prioritized signing depth players for the upcoming season.
My Dad had this to say about the Seahawks free agent moves, “For the most part I liked our signings, except Leonard Williams. I didn’t feel like he was worth 21 million dollars a year.” Leonard Williams was a intriguant part of Seattle’s defense in the second half of the year, yet some of the fanbase is conflicted with the amount he got paid. While, Leonard Williams is no doubt a good player, questions arise whether he’s truly worth 21 million dollars a year. But, based on the market for his positon, one can conclude with Leonard Williams impact on each game he’s in fact worth that contract. My Dad also expressed his frustration on Noah Fant’s resigning, “I don’t think he’s worth what he got paid, he hasn’t gotten enough catches in these past few years to deserve a contract like that.” Opinion’s on Noah Fant are about 50-50, for some he’s a great valuable player, for other’s, he’s not that great and the Seahawks were better off letting him walk. However, considering Fant is still very young and entering a new offense, the resigning of Noah Fant is worth the price for the notable upside he provides.
The addition of many veteran depth pieces may be pivotal for the Seahawks next season, a team in the NFL can’t be successful without quality depth in almost every position. For the Seahawks they prioritized offensive line depth, with the additions of those like Nick Harris and former Seahawk George Fant. Other veteran additions include safety Rayshawn Jenkins, tight end Pharaoh Brown, and corner Artie Burns. Not only does these veteran depth pieces help the team in the regular season, they also help the team prepare for the draft. While there are notable holes on the roster, these free agent signings allow the Seahawks to draft for more positional value opposed to need. While free agency is far from over, the Seahawks may be close to done. So, stay on watch for more potential pivotal depth pieces for the upcoming season.
