Do you love sports and working with kids? Are you looking for a part-time job opportunity? If your answer to these questions is yes, then Maple Valley Parks & Rec sports officiating is the perfect job for you.
Maple Valley Parks & Rec is a department of the city of Maple Valley which offers a year-around schedule of youth programs and activities. Some youth sports leagues include basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, and baseball/slowpitch. These programs are always looking to hire youth referees to officiate games, making for an awesome job opportunity for high schoolers.
Adalynn Busch, a youth basketball official for MV Parks and Rec, explains, “You don’t need experience in refereeing but you need to know how the sport works and what the rules are.”
For all sports, there are two to three training sessions and meetings prior to the first competition. These trainings help standardize the refereeing process across all officials, and eliminate any confusion regarding rules, policies, etc.
A big perk to MV Parks and Rec positions is the schedule flexibility. Seasons are typically about 8 weeks, and games are on Saturdays. League coordinators are typically able to work around officials’ schedules. This makes this position perfect for student athletes looking to earn some extra money.
Maryn King is another youth basketball official who happens to play basketball as a student athlete herself. She explains, “It’s fun watching these kids learn how to play basketball and learning how to work with their team throughout the season.”
Busch adds, “My favorite part of the job is working with friends and interacting with the kids.”
As a referee, you get the unique opportunity to make a difference in young athletes’ lives. Even though it can be difficult and fans may yell at you, you get to help kids learn the rules and fall in love with the sport. These pros make refereeing a lot of fun for athletes and sports fans alike.
