What is the Green Team?
Green Team is a group of high schoolers trying to make the school a greener, more environmentally friendly space. They are a small club with few members, where they brainstorm sustainability ideas and have fun.
Megan Ross; a high school biology teacher, stated, “Green Team is a group of students who are concerned about the sustainability of our world and our globe and they meet to try and solve problems and bring awareness and just hang out and talk about issues.”
Green Team has proven itself to be a safe space for people to speak their minds about the environment and be themselves, holding every member accountable for being friendly and conserving the serenity of the club. Dominoing into a fun, comfortable club to visit once a week.
What is the Green Team Doing/What Have They Done?
The green team has hosted many eco-friendly events, including the thrift store event. The thrift store event consisted of students donating used clothes to the club, for the club to open their doors during lunch during selected times to give those clothes back to students who may want them.
Currently, the green team is working on a few new projects and events. First, they are planning an event called tree-plenish. In this, they are receiving donations to plant trees. Currently, they are going to seed an astounding 300+ trees. Adding that number to previous years, they have accomplished having over 700+ trees planted.
Secondly, they are organizing a trash cleanup. They do a trash pick up once a year where they go around the school and town and collect any trash they may find. By picking up the garbage, they contribute to conserving our beautiful greenery.
Nonetheless, cleaning up the trash and dirtying the town is not the only thing they plan to do to help with this.
They also planned to one day implement a compost system, including setting out compost bins for the students of Tahoma to use instead of placing their food waste in the garbage cans. One of the detremental ways that schools can cause environmental negatives is the amount of sheer food waste they can potentially emit. So, cutting down on that is a good step in the right direction.
Benefits of Being on the Green Team
The main benefit of being in a green team is community service hours. You can sign up for events they organize and receive plenty of community service hours. Thus, green team is a marvelous option for seniors or juniors who need to get their community service hours in.
Increasingly so if they want to cause change in the process. A green team is a stellar option for those who want to make a deviation, with their various events held to conserve our environment.
Solidified by Emily Collette, vice president of the green team club, “I think it’s important because having an environmentalist club in the school just gives people knowledge on a topic that people tend to forget about a lot and it’s just kinda important to kind of understand the green aspect about having a school. So, having a specific club to help push that further and sort of push that idea more and be an advocate for that more I think is a big thing.”
Imagine being a part of something that contributes to saving the entire earth. That is exhilarating!
Furthermore, the green team assists in getting involved in the community. You can come together with your peers and transform barren wastelands into somewhere that has the potential to be a forest. The laughs, the hard work, the brainstorming. Together, building a sense of community within each member.
How Do I Get Involved In Green Team?
The green team meets once a week on Mondays, PH B. To sign up to plant trees for the Tree Plenish event, type into your web browser: “tree-plenish.org” and fill out a volunteer form. However, if you would like to plant, there is a need to have your way to get around since the club would not be providing transportation.
If that is not possible, meeting with the green team can help sign you up to be part of the team of people to give out the trees to the people who plant them. On another note though, attending a green team meeting can additionally give you more insight into oncoming projects and events such as trash pickup.
