“Everyone is so different and special in their own way, and if you take the time to get to know people, they will surprise you,” explains Addy Hansen, a student of Tahoma’s Unified P.E. class.
Unified P.E. is a unique adapted fitness class offered to students at Tahoma High School. It was established in collaboration by Tahoma S.A.I.L. (Successful Academic Independent Learners) teacher Molly Meeks, and physical education teacher Sara Russell. The class partners every general education student with a SAIL student, and together, the students play games, and practice fundamental fitness skills. The class gives the SAIL students great opportunities to work on social skills with their partner, as well as community skills in a fun and safe environment.
The purpose of this course for general education students is to expand their knowledge and compassion, as well as leadership skills within the realm of physical education. They do this through offering support and mentoring for students with disabilities. In this mentor role, the peer partner can be instrumental in helping students feel comfortable while also mastering important skills that will benefit the student in their future. Moreover, the class is very enjoyable.
“My key takeaway from the class is that the unified students are really sweet, and are great partners in P.E. They know how to have a lot of fun,” states Nathalie Soltero, a junior at Tahoma.
This class is a semester-long course, assigned to students in second semester only. It’s offered to students in grades ten through twelve. Unified P.E. is perfect for students who are interested in a career in education, or those who have the desire to work with people with special needs now and in the future. It’s encouraged that anyone with interest, and who receives a recommendation from their physical education teacher, registers for the class.
Soltero adds, “I would definitely recommend taking this class. It’s such a great experience.”
Registration for the 2024-2025 school year closes March 29 at 3:00 p.m., so make sure to choose Unified P.E. as one of your classes for next year!
