Sleep is a vital part of our day, and in order for us to function to full capacity we need good quality sleep. For high schoolers this can quite often be a problem due to the fact that students have to wake up really early in order to get ready and to school on time.
With the responsibility that teenagers tend to have it’s hard to get a full quality night of sleep, yet you have to wake up at the crack of dawn and be prepared to learn for around 6 hours. It is difficult for teenagers to come prepared for school if they do not get a good amount of sleep.
For teenagers that have a job or play a sport their schedule could be overbooked and hard to manage. Imagine you wake up at 6:20 get out of school at 2:15 go to work at 3:30 and get home at 9:00 to do homework besides even eating and showering and more, this gives you no time to yourself.
After speaking to other students at Tahoma High School about the same situation they also agreed that with school starting too early it puts unwanted stress and pressure on a student.
We spoke to a student athlete Kylie Robertson and she said that “I usually skip first period because of how early school starts, “ coming from just one student we can assume that there are many more who also do this. This comes to show that students need more time to sleep especially student athletes.
Me and Brayden actually thought about maybe even starting school later and if the benefits would be worth it. Me and Brayden believe that this is worth it.
When we interviewed Ruvim Romanyuk he stated “Yeah I do tend to fall asleep in class” when asked if he ever falls asleep in class? This shows that even though he got up and made it school he couldn’t stay focused and fell asleep during class, if students are tending to fall asleep we should look at what we can do in order for kids to come prepared and actually learn.
I think that starting school later would benefit Tahoma High School for the good, I say this because I see kids sleeping in class, kids skipping classes, and students that are not functioning to their full potential.
