Each year around the holiday season over 1 billion candy canes are sold. Candy canes are a classic Christmas treat that have been around for a very long time. But where did they come from? The story goes that way back in the 17th century. In Germany, someone came up with the idea of making candy sticks to give out to kids during church services. They wanted to keep the kids quiet and happy, so they made these sweet treats as a distraction for them. 

The original candy sticks weren’t in the iconic shape,though. They were straight like a regular stick. It was only later that someone decided to bend them into a hook shape to make it look like a shepherd’s staff. That’s when the candy canes we know and love today started to take shape.

When asked about how they feel about candy canes, many people had different opinions.

“I mean, I love them. I love to lick the bottom till it gets really sharp”

“I think they’re a Christmas staple. It’s not christmas without them”

Some people also say that the red and white stripes of the candy cane have a special meaning. The white is supposed to represent purity, and the red is for the blood of Jesus. So, candy canes have had a special place in the Christmas tradition for a long time.

As the years went by, candy canes became more and more popular, and ended up making their way to the United States. In 1847, a German-Swedish man named August Imgard put up the first-known Christmas tree with candy canes in Ohio. By the early 20th century, candy canes became a common Christmas treat all across America.

These days, candy canes come in all sorts of flavors and colors, but the classic peppermint flavor and the red and white stripes are still the most popular. They’re a fun and delicious part of the holiday season for people all over the world. It just goes to show that sometimes the simplest ideas can turn into something really special.
