It is safe to say that the Seahawks have not quite been what fans have hoped. They have not necessarily been bad but they also haven’t exactly been great. Questions of the team’s future have been lingering in fans’ minds. Is it time for the team to make major changes? In my eyes, yes, in the realm of quarterback in particular.
Geno Smith has been decent this year. After a very impressive season last year, people expected Geno to perform to that same caliber this season. In recent weeks he has played better than he has in the beginning of the season. The problem is, Geno has reached his ceiling as a quarterback. The Seahawks should look for a high upside QB in this year’s draft.
Alex Manzo-Bremmeyer, a Seahawks fan and College Football fan, had some thoughts on this topic. “I just don’t think Geno can improve anymore than he already has.” Manzo-Bremmeyer also said “If the Seahawks are projected to have a mid to late first round pick, they should target a guy like Jayden Daniels out of LSU or a Michael Penix from UW.” These are very proven Quarterbacks in college who have been arguably the two best players in college football.
With Geno under contract for another two seasons, the team could certainly think about benching a rookie quarterback and developing him. Success stories such as Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes were benched their rookie seasons and were developed under established quarterbacks. This development helped translate their game to the professional level. Imagine having someone like Jayden Daniels who is having a Heisman season and then gets drafted to an already established team. Imagine how good he could end up being learning from Geno Smith and having the tools around him to succeed. If the Seahawks want to have their future secured and become contenders down the road, they should really consider drafting a quarterback this year.
