INTRO:
As we progress further into the year at Tahoma High School, it is important that seniors get their volunteer hours completed. There are many volunteer opportunities provided by the community that are accepted by the school to get the assignment done. If you are a Tahoma senior student this article will help you understand the requirements, opportunities, and exceptions regarding the community service hours assignment.
REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:
All of the community service hours completed must be written down on the “Community Service Hours Log.” Provided by either your AGGI teacher or obtained online, on the hour log sheet there are many different parts that need to be filled out. Date of hours completed, community service activity/organization, number of hours, print name of supervisor or parent, signature of supervisor or parent ,and phone number or email address of supervisor or parent. Seniors are required to complete 10 hours as a graduation requirement. Seniors are also required to provide picture evidence such as, before and after photos showing the work done/end product, photo of them with a volunteer coordinator, picture of the people/animals that benefited from the work and so on. Be aware that only one of these photo examples must be completed and you can find more information here.
OPPORTUNITIES/EXPECTATIONS:
There are many upcoming events to volunteer at posted by THS future ready, however it is also an option to find your own volunteer work, just make sure that it is not set up through any family members, is for pay, or something that is required for a separate class or club. If any of these do happen to be used as volunteer hours they will not be accepted. If you are in need of volunteer work you can sign up for the Elk Run Farm almost any time of the year, this is a very reliable way to get volunteer hours, if this does not seem interesting, there are tons of opportunities updated and posted on the THS future ready page here, or you can talk to your AGGI teacher.
INTERVIEWS:
We talked with two Tahoma High School seniors Hernan and Brayden about their accomplishments and future ideas/plans for their community service hours. Brayden said “I haven’t done any volunteer work yet, but I’m aware that you need pictures and a statement to get credit.” We asked him about his plans for completing the assignment and he stated, “i’ll probably just look at whats posted by my AGGI teacher and do one of those.” Hernan said he had completed four hours already at “The Lake Wilderness arboretum.” We asked him how his experience was and he said, “it was fun, we did things like rake leaves, pull weeds, carry loads, throw away trash, and removing dead trees.” He also stated, “its’ nice knowing you’re helping out the community.” Hopefully this article will help you Tahoma seniors get from start to finish on your volunteer hours.
