After the trade deadline the Seahawks are six and three and tied for first in the NFC West with the San Francisco 49ers. This season has been odd to say the least, while six and three is relatively successful, fans have many questions and concerns regarding the Seahawks future. Fans are left feeling uneasy after watching the Baltimore Ravens dismantle the Seahawks on the road, bringing up several questions. What’s wrong with Geno Smith? Can the team get healthy? Why is the offense so inconsistent? Seahawks fans questions are warranted, the Seahawks continue to struggle week after week.
The consensus is quarterbacks make or break a team, right now Geno Smith is breaking the team. After being consulted about the Seahawks season so far Cameron Weisberg stated, “Geno Smith is not playing well and is hurting the team.” Geno has thrown six interceptions in the last five games, on a Pete Carroll ran team that is not acceptable. There is a lot of obvious flaws fans are noticing each week. Such as, missing throws to extend drives, gift wrapping turnovers to the defense, and taking unnecessary sacks. If Geno Smith’s performance doesn’t improve as the Seahawks hit the gauntlet of their schedule, not only will the team lose multiple games, Geno Smith’s future as a Seahawk may be in question.
However not all hope is lost, as mentioned previously, the Seahawks are six and three. As well as the emergence of multiple position groups and players. Cameron Weisberg raved about Seahawks rookie Devon Witherspoon. “Oh the most surprising part of the Seahawks team is easily Devon Witherspoon, he should be defensive rookie of the year.” Devon Witherspoon’s performance has been fantastic, however Boye Mafe’s play has gone under the radar. Mafe has set a Seahawks record for recording seven sacks in seven straight games. The defensive line improvement combined with the play of the defensive backs has completely changed this defense. Since week two, the Seahawks defense ranks top six in overall defense in the NFL.
Overall, the Seahawks are on the upward trend, the defense is playing well but the offense is lacking. If the offense can find its rhythm the Seahawks can be the dynamic team fans know they can become.
