The Black Student Union is a place for black students at Tahoma High School to come and speak freely and engage within their community.
Senior Kaycee Kaithula stated, “The Black Student Union cultivates safety and unity within our Tahoma community. It allows for Black students and allies to have a space where they can be immersed in conversations of their own culture”. Junior Keimani Leonard, a member of BSU said “This union is for black students to come every wednesday at the beginning of power hour B (lunchtime) and talk with their own community and learn something new until 11:20 which is the end of lunch and the time to go to the next class. Keimani Leonard proclaimed, “I love the fact that we have a BSU at Tahoma, and I am proud to be on the board that runs it. Having a BSU gives people of color a place to be their true authentic selves and speak truth”. What’s being taught in this union? “Within the Black Student Union we cover a plethora of topics: Current events in the Black community, historical Black figures, controversial debates, etc. We even utilize lighthearted games such as Jeopardy and Kahoot to cover information from the given meeting — this is a fan favorite that keeps the club members engaged and actively learning stated by Kaycee Kaithula. BSU is for black students to come together and unite as a black community and participate in activities.
BSU is there to help black students build a community with each other and learn more about the culture and gives black students a chance to feel comfortable and speak out! Even if you’re not black, and you want to know more about the culture and the community, Black Student Union is the right place for you. Every Wednesday during PowerHour B in Room 109
