As the crisp autumn air settles over Maple Valley, the Tahoma High School wrestling team gears up for an exciting season ahead. Among the athletes eagerly anticipating the first whistle is Trey Monaghan, a seasoned wrestler and senior, set to take on his sixth and final year on the mat.
“I’m most excited about having my final ride with my fellow seniors as well as going on trips with the team,” Trey says with enthusiasm. The camaraderie among the seniors, seasoned by years of training and competing together, is noticeable. For Trey, this season is not just about the victories on the mat but the bonds made off it.
Wrestling has been a significant part of Trey’s life since 7th grade, and as he enters his sixth year on the team, the journey has been one of growth, resilience, and unforgettable memories. “This will be year 6,” Trey says, reflecting on the time he has dedicated to perfecting his craft and contributing to the Tahoma wrestling legacy.
When asked about his favorite memory of being on the team, Trey’s eyes light up “My favorite memory of being on the team is going to Ilwaco for summer duals and having former Tahoma bear Chris Neal say ‘I’m Batman’ in a tent,” he reminisces. It’s moments with teammates like these that make the wrestling experience at Tahoma High School more than just a sport, it’s an experience of shared stories, inside jokes, and lasting friendships.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, one noticeable change has captured the attention of the wrestlers. The introduction of new singlets. Trey Monaghan shares his thoughts on the fresh gear. “The new singlets are fire, and I love the bringing back of the black super T’s.” With excitement in his voice, it’s evident that the team’s aesthetic adds an extra layer of anticipation to an already charged atmosphere.
Tahoma High School’s wrestling program has a lengthy history, With the program placing top 10 in state since 2005. Winning the state title in 2017 and 2012, where that year’s team broke the state of Washington’s record for most points scored in the state tournament, with 190 points. Coming into this new season, the team is returning 12 of their 18 state participants from the previous year. Each of them looking to add another chapter to their program’s legacy. There’s a sense of determination and passion among the team. The long hours of practice, the sweat soaked singlets, and the adrenaline fueled matches, all contribute to the unique experience that is high school wrestling.
As the team embarks on this new season, the seniors, including Trey, carry the weight of both their individual aspirations and the collective spirit of Tahoma High School’s wrestling brotherhood. The anticipation for memorable trips and the final ride together is in the air, setting the stage for a season that promises not only success as a team, but also a celebration of friendship, growth, and the indomitable spirit of Tahoma wrestling.
