There are many different study techniques that can be used to help students succeed in their upcoming tests and term/semester finals as we get deeper into the school year. If your average study method is something like using flashcards or reviewing homework, there are many other ways to remember information faster and more efficiently. Although some teachers and students might recommend these more classic study methods, they are not for everyone, especially if you are looking to get the best grade possible. This article will go over 5 study methods that will help boost your test scores.
The first study method is interleaving, interleaving is the practice of mixing multiple topics into one study session to improve learning. This study method has been shown to help students retain information and improve problem solving skills by being able to switch between multiple topics at a time.
The second study method is the 10-24-7 rule, The 10-24-7 rule is a study technique used to help retain information after taking notes in a class. Each number in 10-24-7 represents an amount of time between reviewing your notes.
You apply this technique by reviewing you notes 10 minutes after, 24 hours after and then 7 days after writing the information down.
The third study method is the Pomodoro method, it is a study method used to break down study sessions into increments of 30-45 minutes with a 5-15 minute break in between where you are meant to take away all your focus from what you were studying. This method is helpful for people who have a hard time focusing on one thing for a long period of time.
The fourth method is the Feynman Technique, this technique is where you take a subject your trying to learn and teach it to a child, someone who needs a step by step process of what exactly is going on. This method can be extremely helpful in finding out what you personally dont understand about the topic your trying to learn because it will likely get you asking the “whys?” to every little bit of information you provide.
The fifth method is the PQ4R Study Method. This method walks through step by step how to learn something: Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review. By following these steps you can run test subjects and questions through the PQ4R process and be sure that you will remember more information than before.
We talked to 2 Tahoma High School students Dominic Ybarra and Hayden Brawley about their favorite ways to study. Hayden said, “I find it helpful to study with videos, while I’m watching the videos I like to take very in depth notes”. And Dominic said “ I make note cards with the notes I take in class so I can study them later. I also like to play study games like kahoot because it’s a fun way to study”. We also asked them what they think a reasonable amount of time to spend studying a day is. Hayden said “I think 20-30 minutes a day is good enough if you have a test at the end of the week”. And Dominic said “it depends on what you are studying for, if it was for an AP class I’d spend an hour studying everyday a week before the class and if it was just a regular class I’d probably spend 45 minutes.”

This is great information to acknowledge and use in individuals educational abilities. This can give people a better way to study and maintain that knowledge! I might use this to be honest to catch up with better grades 🙂
