Who is he and why is his music so incredible? His name is Noah Kahan and he is a singer songwriter in the folk-pop genre.
Noah Kahan began releasing music in 2018 with his song Hurt Somebody, since then his music career has skyrocketed with his albums titled, I Was/I Am, Busyhead, and Stick Season.
With the success of his newest release Stick Season we can only expect more great things from this incredible artist.
Noah was born and raised in Vermont and went to high school in New Hampshire so he bases a lot of his songs on living in a small town in New England.
When first hearing his song Dial Drunk I didn’t expect to dig so deep into his music. I had heard his song on Tik Tok and I fell in love with his lyrics.
“I’m untethering from the parts of me you’d recognize, from charming to alarming in seconds. I’ll be bedridden, I’ll let the pain metastasize, but that’s morning, I’ll forget it.” This song would pop up almost daily so I decided to listen to the rest of his music to see what the hype was about. I was not disappointed.
Noah’s fan base has only grown stronger as time has gone on with about 18 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His most listened to songs according to Spotify are Hurt Somebody, False Confidence, and Stick Season, the title track off of his most recent album.
While I can understand the appeal of those songs, I think that they are mostly popular because they are some of the most talked about. Hurt Somebody was the first song he ever released making it the first thing people knew him for, after that there was False Confidence which is the first song on his album Busyhead which seems to be a lot of people’s favorite.
When listening to his music it’s almost like I can feel the words he is saying, he writes in a way that makes you want to feel his lyrics the way that he feels them.
From his lyrics in The View Between Villages, “the things that I lost here, the people I knew, they got me surrounded for a mile or two,” to his lyrics in Growing Sideways, “so I took my medication and I poured my trauma out on some sad-eyed middle aged man’s overpriced new leather couch… I’m still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them, but it’s a start,” he hits the mark every time.
Most recently he has been releasing popular songs on his album Stick Season but he is collaborating with other artists. He has been working with a wide variety of artists such as Post Malone, Lizzy McAlpine, and Kacey Musgraves.
Many people that are fans of his have been calling him “Folk Malone” for quite some time so it was quite fun and surprising when he released Dial Drunk featuring Post Malone his rap couterpart.
When asking my friends Dolly Powers and Cole Childs if they listened to Noah Kahan, both of them said they’ve never listened to him and had never even heard of him until I asked which is exactly why I decided to write about him.
Encouraging others to listen to his music is the least I could do compared to what his songs have done for me in the last few months that I discovered him. The best advice I could give anyone is listen to his music, feel the words, live your best life with him singing in your ear.
