In the heart of Tahoma High School, Mr. Burnham is more than just an ordinary teacher. With a background as diverse as his interests, Mr. Burnham’s journey into education is fascinating, driven by a passion to help students grow not only academically but as individuals.
Before embarking on his teaching career, Mr. Burnham, also known as Boomer, had a diverse array of experiences. “Prior to teaching, I had multiple jobs. My main job leading into teaching was working as a para educator,” he shared. This experience allowed him to gain valuable insights into the educational system and ignited a spark that eventually led him into the teaching profession.
Mr. Burnham’s transition from para educator to a teacher was fueled by his desire to make a more profound impact on student’s lives. “I got into teaching through working as a para educator and as a coach,” he explained. Coaching wrestling not only offered him a platform to connect with young individuals but also allowed him to help teach students the skills of the sport, like hard work, determination, and teamwork. This experience, coupled with his time as a para educator, gave him the realization that teaching was an extraordinary option for him. He found that the classroom was where he could help students the most.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Burnham is a man of many interests. Like it was mentioned earlier, Boomer does more than just teach. “I work on my business Boomers Photography, own rental homes, and continue to coach wrestling,” he shared. These things not only bring more to his life but also provide him with a unique perspective that he brings into his teaching. Whether it’s through the lens of a camera, managing properties, or guiding wrestlers, Boomer is always teaching in some capacity.
When asked about his favorite part of being a teacher, Mr. Burnham’s response was filled with enthusiasm. He said, “Helping students grow as people.” He takes pride in being a mentor and guiding his students through their high school years, helping them build essential life skills, and fostering a sense of personal growth. While also having a number of prior students and wrestlers come back following graduation to visit.
Mr. Burnham’s classroom is a great place for his students. His teaching style is characterized by a combination of humor, understanding, and a commitment to individualized learning. Helping a student whenever it is needed. He recognizes that every student is unique and has different strengths and weaknesses. By tailoring his teaching approach to cater to the specific needs of each student, he makes sure that no student is left behind.
Furthermore, Boomer encourages a positive and inclusive classroom environment. “Boomer’s classroom always has a bunch of people in it during power hour” A student added. This includes students staying in there to eat lunch, and others coming to visit him during their break from classes. His students often mention his humor “I can always count on Boomer to get me to laugh throughout the day” A student of his named Walker brought up.
Mr. Burnham is more than a teacher, he is a mentor, a coach, and a role model. His journey from para educator to teacher reflects his dedication to the betterment of his students. The impact he has on his student’s lives extends far beyond the classroom, and his commitment to helping them grow as individuals is a testament to his character.
