Hikers all around the Pacific Northwest have stirred up a debate about whether hiking boots or trail runners are superior for hiking. But what separates the two, and what makes one clearly more superior to the other?
Jenny Davis, a former REI Retail/Shoe Specialist, was asked this question, she replied with, “Hiking boots have a stronger shank. If you pick up a pair of trail runners, you can typically bend them in half. You cannot typically bend a hiking boot in half, they’re too stiff.” Therefore, hiking boots provide hikers with added support, while trail runners acquire a flimsy and unsupportive feel for hikers. Davis mentioned that hiking boots are more popular because they “can make backpacking and long day hikes more enjoyable.
Another feature of hiking boots is you can have them resoled, which means they can last a lot longer than shoes.” So not only do hiking boots provide support, but they make long hikes more enjoyable than trail runners, and can last a long time. When Walker Finlinson, a Tahoma student who hikes regularly was asked if he preferred hiking boots or trail runners, he replied, “I prefer trail runners just because they’re lighter.”
Indeed, trail runners are a good choice for those who would like to stay bouncy and on the balls of their feet due to their lightness. According to Davis, trail runners would be a good option “[i]f you’re an avid trail runner on multi terrain (rocks, dirt, roots, mud, etc).” Although trail runners last only so long.
Their durability does not compare to that of hiking boots. Hayden Brawley, another Tahoma student who hikes, swears by hiking boots because “trail runners don’t give [his] ankles enough support, which makes it really easy to twist something and hurt yourself.” Then again, supporting the idea that hiking boots provide the most enjoyable experience due to their extreme durability and enough support for the ankles. The only downside it seems there is about hiking boots is the difficulty there is in finding a comfortable pair and their expense. Although, when it comes to hiking boots durability compared to trail runners, maybe hiking boots would keep more money in your wallet.
When hikers are finding themselves hiking boots, in order to allow them to be as enjoyable as possible, Davis points out, “Fit is incredibly important. The fit has to be right so you don’t get blisters. You also need to make sure there is room in the toe area for coming down steep grades.”
Therefore, whether you like running or taking your time on hikes, keep in mind which shoes you wear to make sure you are as comfortable as can be. With boots being the most popular for a number of reasons, it may be smart to start with boots as a beginner. Then see your preferences from there!
