The World Beyond Power Hour Clubs

CJ Cantu, Editor and Journalist

In one way or another, students manage to find something within the school to keep themselves occupied. Like many, there are those who find themselves entertained and relaxed as they walk into a classroom during Power Hour to release some stress. Yes, clubs are fun during the day but they only last so long. But what about the ones that you only hear of on the intercom or get promoted on social media platforms?

I’m here to talk to you about not only my experience, but about how doing an after-school activity can actually help you. Especially the ones where you get to see the final product.

In October 2021, I was picked to join Tahoma’s Drama Club. I was assigned to Sound Crew and from there, it was off to the races. It was stressful, sometimes overwhelming, and there were days where it seemed as though nothing was going right or on-cue. Yet at the same time, it was relaxing, tension was lifted off my shoulders, and I’d often find myself staring at the clock counting the minutes until I could go down to the PAC to set up for rehearsal.

I’d spend almost four to five hours on the weekdays after school and about twelve on the weekends for performances. The productions were time consuming, but in a good way. For clubs during Power Hour, they usually assemble strictly during either PH A or B on Gold or Blue days.

Now of course I understand that this opinion can be contradicted, but as someone who has done both a PH club and after-school activities, I feel as though after-school activities are a good option for those who want to be more involved with their school and make long-lasting friendships.

But I want to hear from you, would you consider doing an after school activity?
