If you’re on TikTok, chances are you’ve seen a video of some guy singing on SNL in the classic 70’s fringed vest. You may have not liked it, or you thought it sounded odd or a bit eccentric. Maybe it inspired you to delve a little deeper into who the viral Saturday Night Live singing sensation actually is.

Back in 2019, Saturday Night Live invited the emerging rock band Greta Van Fleet to be the musical guest on Rachel Brosnahan’s (Marvelous Miss Maisel) episode. Most people had no idea that this was a  Grammy award winning rock band.

Greta Van Fleet consists of 3 brothers and their childhood best friend from a small town in Michigan. Josh Kiszka, the vocalist, and Jake Kiszka, the lead guitarist are twins, and their younger brother Sam plays the bass and keys. Danny Wagner is the drummer and longtime friend of the brothers.

The band is named after the boys’ childhood music teacher, Gretna Van Fleet. Josh claims that they dropped the “n” because they thought it would annoy people. They are all known for their elaborate outfits, but Josh is always in some sort of iconic jumpsuit, or a white shirt and khaki shorts. There is no in between. They have a series of hilarious mock MasterClass videos on YouTube and iconic interviews if you ever need a laugh.

They fall under a few subgenres depending on what album you’re listening to. From the Fires (Grammy Award for Best Rock Album) has a harder rock feel to it. This is in comparison to The Anthem of the Peaceful Army which is more folk rock. Their newest album The Battle at Gardens Gate is a progressive rock album with some truly incredible songs on it.

They won a Grammy for Best Rock Album with From the Fires. They were nominated for Best Rock Song with Black Smoke Rising and Best Rock Performance for Highway Tune. But they also have an iHeartRadio Music Award under their belt for their song, Safari Song.

Many have said they sound too much like Led Zeppelin, which may be the case for some listeners. However, they have a unique style and vibe that draws in almost 3 million listeners every month. They have fans all over the world and are touring from February to November (including Spokane!)
