Us Movie Review
April 5, 2019
Jordan Peele has created another masterpiece. His horrifying second feature film, Us, is nothing short of brilliant.
The film is centered around the Wilson family. Adelaide, played by Lupita Nyong’o, takes her family on a vacation to a place that causes her to reflect back to a past memory that she never wanted to revisit. When they arrive at Adelaide’s old childhood home, Gabe Wilson, the father, played by Winston Duke, notices eerie figures standing outside in their driveway. They soon come to realize that the figures are their doppelganger selves.
Us is the perfect example of a good horror film. It relies on subtle hints throughout the film and the uneasy feeling that the doppelgangers portray to give the film an uncanny feeling instead of only predictable jump scares.
As the film progresses, more and more questions begin to arise within the audience’s mind. The film is designed to make you think, they don’t just tell you things blatantly right off the bat and you are most likely going to be confused during parts of the film. You will notice smaller details as you rewatch it, that will completely change the way you watch the film. There are so many different ways to perceive this film just by knowing the way that events unfold and that is part of what makes this film so unique. You will no doubt be leaving the theater with unanswered questions.
This cast had the pressure of having to portray two completely different characters, and they did it incredibly. I believe that this is undoubtedly Lupita Nyong’o’s best performance as an actress. The way that she completely immerses herself into both roles is one of the most unsettling features to watch about the film and I loved every second of it. Not to mention the two kids Jason and Zora played by Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex. These fresh faces to the big screen are also able to embody themselves into not just one but two completely polar opposite characters flawlessly.
Contrary to Peele’s last film Get Out, Us focuses more on the horror aspect of the film. However, it is still filled with several laughs that occasionally remind you that this film is infact written, produced and directed by the hilarious Jordan Peele.
Us is a must see for thrill and horror movie lovers. Jordan Peele has created yet another Oscar worthy original screenplay and I can’t wait to see what he creates next.
