Have you ever heard the term ‘April showers bring May flowers?’ This phrase has been around for some time. But does it really explain the weather here in the United States?
Although this phrase is commonly used in the United States, it originates from the United Kingdom. Poet Thomas Tusser wrote in his poem “Sweet April Showers Do Spring, May Flowers.” Which can explain how this phrase does really attribute to any real weather patterns.
This can be commonly used to compare the weather in the months of April and May. Biology and AP Environmental Science Teacher Mr Jackson says that this phrase is not made to be accurate to the real weather and climate, “. . .so it could probably be taken not as a comment on the weather but as an observation about life – that sometimes bad times lead to good times. It would be hard to give clear examples that link the proverb to observable weather phenomena and climate change.”
But the phrase could also have become popular in the US because “. . . the jet stream also moves northward in the spring. As winter comes to an end, precipitation falls more as rain instead of snow.” (The meaning behind ‘April showers bring May flowers’).
The weather patterns today have changed signifigantly since the time this phrase and poem were written. Now we can see how the rain in our area holds out long after April. Even though it is currently May, we have had many days where is it pouring all day long.
The phrase can also be attributed to being used as a comparison of life. A way to show patience to encourage the good things ahead. Even though it may be showering now, the flowers will follow through. Everything can have a good ending no matter how it started.
Overall, the phrase ‘April Showers bring May Flowers’ may not reflect real weather patterns, but it can reflect life as a whole. It can show how even if something may seem sad now, it will all be worth it in the end. Because in the end, you will see those flowers, the flowers that only come out after the showers.
Looking back now this phrase may seem silly, considering that it doesn’t even reflect real weather. But it can reflect real life. A life where good outcomes are always possible.
