As we return from Spring Break, ready to take on the remainder of the school year, it becomes a question of whether or not we should have more breaks after this.
After Spring Break we only have Memorial Day and Juneteenth off due to weather make-ups and power outages. Is this sustainable enough? Especially considering that May is AP Test season and it is SBA testing season for 10th graders. These last two months of school are stressful enough and with only mere weekends between each week? Are these the only breaks we get?
Tahoma student Lianna Sednev thinks that we have the perfect amount of breaks, but that they could be longer, “I personally think that spring break should be two weeks because school is overwhelming and so kids won’t skip more school because they won’t make it back from their vacations or leave early and skip school.” Lianna thinks that if Spring break was longer, then people wouldn’t need to cut their vacations or cut school to make it to their vacations.
I don’t mind the one-week break, but I think that we should have more scattered breaks. Such as our scattered breaks that we are supposed to have in March. But these days off get cut off every year because of snow days or power outages. If the school set aside more days for students to take a break and have a day off to relax, then maybe fewer kids would skip real days of school.
This idea can also tie into the idea of ‘Mental Health Days’ days where kids have days set aside that they can use to stay home and rest for a day. Sort of like sick leave days, these days are chosen by students on days that they would like to skip.
Overall, we have about a month and a half cumulated worth of breaks. Do you think we need more?
