Women’s history month became a thing in 1987 when congress passed a resolution designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month” after being petitioned by the national women’s history project.
In 1978, something called the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California organized a week-long celebration of women, and soon after the week was done people decided to post the whole month as for women.
For a more specific datem in February 1980, the president at the time (Jimmy Carter) issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as national women’s history week.
Even in 1987, congress passed public law 100-9, designating the month of March as “women’s history month”.
Even though not much time has passed, women still have the month of march that they get some time, people are still respecting women just in different ways, learning about and honoring the achievements of women in history, supporting women-owned businesses, and engaging in activities that promote gender equality and inclusion. Many people choose to celebrate it by reading books and articles, attending events in libraries, schools, community centers, and hosting lectures, workshops and films. visiting museums and exhibitions, social media campaigns.
Even here at tahoma we do things to celebrate women history month, starting off with
Feminine Union club, Equity club that Mrs. Debolt used to run. Tahoma also teaches students about important women throughout our time in different history classes. The Feminine student Union club here at tahoma does wright letters to the national washington women settlers about things that concern them, but the biggest thing that they do is the hygiene run that goes on for the entire month of march, where anyone can drop of hygiene products by the FRC and they come to collect the products at the end of the month. They also make slides of important women that get posted on the tvs that run all throughout the school day.
The Feminin Student Union meets every other week and only on Gold Mondays in room 303 only in PHA. They have around 30 members in the google classroom but sadly not very many come to the meetings. They encourage students to join the club and become part of the Union here at tahoma.
Should Tahoma do more in the month of march? What do you think they should do to support more women in the month of march?
