Our school is messy. With almost 3 thousand students, spills, litter, and other messes are imminent. It’s not our fault sometimes, sometimes there is ice outside or a classroom needs work. Thankfully we have a team of custodians who clean, and do maintenance on the school anywhere it’s needed, day and night, snow or ice.
Every day as we go about are day, 2 custodians, Mrs. K and (Sad guys name) clean tables and sweep floors on every floor. Every morning they get here (when they get here) to make sure that our sidewalks aren’t icy. They even fix or do maintenance on things around the school, one day I was walking and I even saw Mrs. K had taped off and was painting a room all by herself, when I spoke to her she didn’t seem upset at all about it and happily told me about her day and asked me about mine.
I talked to Mrs K and asked them the important questions. First, how long have you been doing this? “I’ve been working here since the new school opened about 8 years ago.” How much earlier do you get here than the students/How long after we all leave are you guys here? “I’m part of the day shift and we work from 5:30 in the morning to 2 and night shift works from 5:30pm to 1:30 am but sometimes people call out and we cover them. Yesterday I was here from 5:30 am to 5 pm” How many of you are there? “There’s nine of us total, 3 on day shift and 3 on night shift, each person is responsible for a floor.” What are some of the things you do around the school on a daily basis? “When I first get here I test the A/C and the heat so that you guys have air conditioning, I test the lights, clean the bathrooms, and overall put the school together a bit.”
So when you come into school and see how nice the walls are, how warm, and how everything is still running, you can thank the nine people that work day and night for giving us a nice place to learn.
