Recently, the Met Gala took place, where heads were turned for all sorts of reasons. The Met Gala is a celebrity fundraiser where designers come together and represent only the few celebrities that were invited. The Met Gala’s theme this year, in 2024 was “a walk through the forest of history” and “Aurora”. 

Students at Tahoma High School were asked which looks were their favorite and why. Liana Hunt expressed that Lana Del Ray was her favorite because of the abstract idea behind it that connected so well with the theme (Hunt). Lucy Raulerson stated, “Zendaya was my favorite look because she actually had an outfit change” (Raulerson). 

Hunt and Raulerson were then asked which looks stood out the most to them, to which Raulerson replied, “Cardi B is the weirdest to me because it seemed to have nothing to do with the theme” (Raulerson). Hunt considered the looks and revealed that Tyla’s look stood out the most because of how well it shaped Tyla herself while cohesively matching the theme, Hunt mentioned that it was hard to look away but it was also hard and uncomfortable to imagine herself wearing the same thing (Hunt).

We interviewed our local Fashion Teacher: Mrs. Durrett about the topic. We first asked how she felt about the theme, she said: “I absolutely loved the theme! I thought it was fresh and provided an opportunity to have new hope, a new life. As a world that has survived a pandemic and has so much inner fighting and hate that is sensationalized, the Met Gala theme provided a space to become whimsical and playful, again.” This point of view is so inspiring to think about.

Overall, the abstract ideas that were presented throughout the Met Gala of 2024, touched on many beautiful aspects of history and society today. All the while turning heads and always allowing entertainment to continue with a smile.
