Have you ever eaten cheese and thought what is the significance, or where does it come from? Well in today’s article, we will talk about cheese and what it means to different people and the culture, and history behind it in different places. So sit tight as we unbox the craziest, funnest stories about cheese.
Cheese is a food made from dairy that many people enjoy. It is a tasty and savory snack. It also has a lot of stories/origins. To dive a little deeper into this we interviewed Wren, a Tahoma High School Freshman, and we’ll start with Gouda cheese and its history. “So, Gouda is actually known locally as Howdah, named after the city Howdah, but there was no cheese making there, but it was a really big market place for cheese, eventually getting named after the city.” They continued, “One of the farmers there who lives on a remote island, with her husband and kids, makes cheese 24/7. They do it the traditional way, which is with wooden molds… and they do a traditional salt bath, which big companies don’t do.” Thanks to what Wren told us, we were able to see what cheese means to the people of Howdah and how their culture goes with the story.
The next story we got to hear from Wren was about Cheddar and what their story with cheese is. “The origin behind cheddar was that a milk maid went into a cave with a bucket of milk, went away and came back the next day and basically went oh my gosh there’s cheddar and it became really popular.”
A fun fact we got to hear was, “There’s another cheese that is made in a really small region, because a specific type of bacteria grows there, so the cows milk has that bacteria, and that’s the only way they can make that cheese.”
Throughout the interviews we did with Wren, and were very thankful to have someone who has an interest in the history of cheese in different places around the world, which made this whole article possible. We made sure to fact check any, and all the info we were told and everything we got to learn from Wren is pretty much completely true, So as we wrap up this article we hope that you have found some interesting facts about cheese and maybe even encouraged you to learn more about the history of different cheeses and the culture to different people around the world.
